“I see, I feel, hence I notice, I observe, and I think.”
- Roland Barthes
To Know You, Now and Then is Linda Moses’ first monograph. Photographing in and around her childhood home in Williamsburg, Virginia between 2019 - 2022, the work confronts a desire to document the relationship between herself and her aging parents. To comprehend and form their identities to their physical surroundings.
The images Moses makes with her parents is an act of collaboration and love. Carefully picked clothing items, locations and gestures all combine in color relationships—which blur the lines of fact, fiction, document and performance. By presenting her own photographs alongside images found in the family archive, she relates the construction of images to the construction of memory.
“My parents look at me in pictures, and I recognize myself as the person they see. In these moments I feel that the camera doesn’t exist.”
- Linda Moses
Linda Moses (b. 1994) is an artist and educator based in Syracuse, New York. She received her BA in Art History from William & Mary and an MFA from Syracuse University. In still and moving images, she uses the camera as a tool for research into family, selfhood, intimacy, and performance. By presenting the act of looking as a recurring subject, she examines the relationship between observation and care, and image-making as a means of depicting the unknowable. Her work has most recently been shown at Study Hall Gallery in Utica, NY, the Syracuse University Art Museum in Syracuse, NY, Governor's Island, and Villa Heike in Berlin. She is currently an Adjunct Professor of Photography and Media Arts at Syracuse University and PrattMWP.
